Hello Juniors!

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season, celebrating with family and friends and I hope that 2017 is full of joy and happiness. Sitting here reflecting on 2016, we started on a journey by helping design better lives. Thank you for all the time and energy you have devoted to improve the lives of others. We are into reporting season, which means you get to tell your story! This is your opportunity to let us know all of the things your club did in 2016! We cannot wait to read all about the projects, programs and fundraisers you have all planned and executed over the past year!

Even if you just report on your favorite project or program…we would love that. How often do you get to brag all about the things you do? This is your chance. Reporting Packets were handed out in September and club presidents should have all the information you need. Should you have any questions or need any help, please reach out to our Junior Dean of Chairmen, Loretta Revesz or anyone else on the Junior EC or any of the Junior Chairmen. We are here to help you. Remember the reporting deadline is February 1st, 2017. Meaning, that all reports need to be post marked or emailed on or before February 1, 2017.

Again, we cannot wait to read your reports and share all of your news with GFWC. Happy New Year to all of you, and Happy Reporting!

In Federation Friendship, Jeanette

Hello GFWC IL Juniors!
I hope you have had a fun and relaxing summer and that this cooler weather is as welcome to you as it is to me. With September brings the beginning of most of our clubs year. I am sure you are busy planning activities, programs and projects that will design better lives all over our state!  Please keep a good record of those activities, programs and projects. Those records should include the number of hours, number of members amount of in kind donations and monies spent and donated. They should also include a description of what was done, how it was done and who benefited. Once you have all of that, you have a report. Reporting is that easy and our goal is to have every club, General, Junior and Juniorette submit at least one Report. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Please be on the lookout for the Reporting Packet, which should be distributed by your District Director of Junior Clubs this Fall. Once your receive your packet, be sure to open it immediately, it will include not only reporting information, but the 2016-2017 GFWC IL Yearbook, Treasurers Packet, Resolutions, Scholarship forms, Contest forms and much, much more! I know our Junior Clubs are out there helping design better lives, don’t keep it to yourself, tell us all about it by reporting!
Are you considering attending the Great Lakes Region Conference? It is the last weekend in October, the 27th – 30th. You still have time to register, but act soon, the deadline is September 24th. If you cannot make it to Wisconsin for GLR this year, then make plans for next year as we will be in our state, yep right here in Illinois. Mark your calendar, the dates are September 14th – 17th, 2017. We will share more information as soon as the plans are made.
Lastly I hope you have a productive club year and that you and your family enjoys the season. Remember take time to be thankful for all you have and for all you are able to do for others.
If you need anything, have any questions or just want to chat, I’m here…

Hello GFWC IL Juniors!

Welcome to the 2016-2018 GFWC IL Junior Administration!  There are not enough words to tell you how honored and blessed I feel to be your Director of Junior Clubs.  We will be GFWC IL Juniors…helping design better lives.  Our colors will be black and white.  Why did I choose black and white?  First, it is a classic color combination that I think most everyone likes.  The colors are so diverse however they come together brilliantly, which of course reflects the GFWC motto Unity in Diversity.  Why all those patterns?  Stripes, Chevron, Polka-Dots and Diamonds?  Pretty much anything goes, if it is black and white and it is some sort of pattern you are in.  We accept all people no matter who they are, we will help all people no matter who they are.  No one type of person is better than the other.  I was trying to show that diversity.  You’ve heard me say pretty much anything goes.

Of course we will support the GFWC IL Junior Project, Children’s Research Foundation, the GFWC IL Project, Illinois Prevent Child Abuse…Our Promise a Safe Place for Every Child and the GFWC Project Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention.  However I have decided not to select a Director’s Special Emphasis.  Nothing I could choose would be better that what you and your club choose.  If you pick something, a project or program that touches your heart, that you see a need for, that you know you will help others, that is what I want you to devote your time, talent and energy to.  Your passion will come through and you will succeed at demonstrating and living out our motto:  GFWC IL Juniors…helping design better lives!

I hope you are planning on attending the Summer Seminar Region Meetings.  Southern Region in Effingham on Thursday July 14th, Central Region in Bloomington on Friday July 15th and Northern Region in Lisle on Saturday, July 16th.  These meetings will be packed full of information, not only for the GFWC IL 2016-2018 Administration, but also for GFWC. The new GFWC Club Manual should be released soon and our chairman will be presenting tried and true project suggestions, along with new ideas for helping design better lives. Watch our GFWC IL Junior Facebook page for all the details!

Lastly, I hope you and your family enjoy your summer.  Be sure to spend some time relaxing and re-energize so you will be ready to hit the club year with a bang!

If you need anything, have any questions or just want to chat, I’m here…

The 121st Annual GFWC IL Convention is Almost Here!

Hello, Juniors! We are just a few weeks away from the 121st Annual GFWC IL State Convention. Can you even believe it? Seems like just yesterday we were preparing to gather in Bloomington for the start of this administration. And POOF! Just like that – it is over!

Hope to see you all May 12th-14th in Springfield, where we will be taking over the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, in celebration of another spectacular year of GFWC IL accomplishments.

In addition to tending to the business activities of our great organization, Convention is also a wonderful time to reunite with GFWC IL friends both near and far. And this is an ELECTION YEAR! Let your ONE VOICE be heard as you cast your vote in the 2016 election, selecting the officers of our next administration. How very exciting!

Junior Day is Friday, May 13th and we will once again be announcing our Junior Leadership Awards during the Unity Luncheon. Did your club have a Spark Plug, Junior of the Year or Outstanding Junior Service Award nominee this year? Please come out and support these fabulously talented Juniors! And we will also be announcing all Junior State awards at the Junior Business Session, taking place immediately following the Unity Luncheon. With all of this excitement and activity, you surely won’t want to miss out!

It has been an exceptional honor to serve with our incredibly gracious GFWC IL State President Diane Addante this administration. I hope you all will take the time to thank her personally during this Convention for a job well done these past two years.

In closing, I am sending my best wishes to an outstanding individual, Ms. Jeanette T. Wells, as she prepares to assume the role of GFWC IL Director of Junior Clubs. I could not be more proud of her and her accomplishments as she prepares to be installed on Saturday, May 14th, 2016. Congratulations, Jeanette! You are a fantastic leader in every way and I am truly blessed to call you “friend”.

See you all in Springfield!

Happy 2016 GFWC IL Juniors!

Hoping that each of you are doing well in this first week of the New Year! After all the celebrations trickle away, we find ourselves gearing up for the biggest party of the year, the 121st Annual State Convention! Hard to believe but it is already upon us. Madam President Diane Addante is putting the finishing touches on the Convention Call as we speak! Many fun and exciting things are planned so I hope you all will join us at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield Hotel, located at 701 East Adams Street in Springfield, IL May 12th – 14th, 2016.

We will be announcing our Junior Leadership Award Winners at the Unity Luncheon on Friday, May 14th, and then immediately celebrating all of your club and district accomplishments at the afternoon Junior Business Session so please plan accordingly! In fact, reservations are now open. All information can be found here. Hotel Reservation Form 2016

Of course, in order to receive awards, you all must do one very important thing….REPORT!! Club Presidents, please make sure your committee chairs who served from January 1, 2015 – December 31, 2015 complete their reporting duties in a timely matter and that all club reports are submitted by February 1, 2016. This is the ONLY way your club or its leaders can be recognized at Convention. District Directors, please reach out to your Club Presidents and check in on them! They may need your assistance! And Club Presidents, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your District Director or our Junior Dean of Chairmen Cherie Sieger with any questions.

I know many clubs will be holding installations in April and May so please remember to invite Jeanette and I – we love to meet our club members and really love installing new club officers! Additionally, I’m looking forward to meeting with our Central Region Club Presidents for an informational one-day retreat in late February; watch your mail for the invite! I will also post all details here and on Facebook.

In closing, please remember my challenge to all Junior Clubs. All clubs who donate $250 or more to Children’s Research Foundation will be included on a special plaque that will be given to Pat Broggi from CRF at the Unity Luncheon on Friday, May 14th. You won’t want to miss out on this special opportunity to highlight the 40th Anniversary of our first gift to the organization! Be sure to get your checks into GFWC IL Headquarters and clearly mark “For CRF” in the memo section of your check.

Wishing you all a wonderful winter and I look forward to seeing you all at our State Board Meeting in March and at our 121st Annual State Convention in May. Best of luck with reporting; can’t wait to celebrate with ONE VOICE!

Until then, I remain yours in Federation Friendship,

Karyn

Hello GFWC IL Juniors!

Fall is now upon us and we are once again focused on our club projects and events! I trust you all had an enjoyable and restful summer! Hoping your energy has also turned to recruitment and retention of members for your clubs. Back to school is one of the best times to host a membership drive or meet and greet event; many clubs find this be a successful way to introduce potential members to your club and your mission.

This is also a PERFECT time to consider sponsoring a Juniorette club! Work with your local school district about partnering with them. Request a meeting with the school counselors and/or guidance department so that you may educate them on the history of our organization and how our work closely ties into service clubs they may offer through the school.

Please remember my challenge to all GFWC IL Junior clubs to raise $$$ for the Children’s Research Foundation! May 2016 will mark the 40th anniversary of our first donation to CRF and we’d like to make sure we have a sizable donation for Pat Broggi at Convention.

Also please mark your calendars for Advocates for Children week, October 18-24th, 2015. This is a dedicated week for your clubs to truly make a difference in the lives of children in your community. Ideas for projects can be found here: 2014-16 CSP Juniors Special Project

In closing, I’d like to remind you all to sign up for GFWC’s News & Notes e-newsletter if you have not already done so. It truly is a phenomenal way to stay in touch with GFWC International Headquarters! Sign up today!

Hello GFWC IL Juniors!

WOW! What an exciting two months this has been! May brought us the celebration of our 120th Annual State Convention and close to 300 GFWC clubwomen took over the Hilton Lisle; highlights for me were plentiful! The first I would have to say was having our very own Deb Strahanoski and Becky Weber BOTH in attendance as their GFWC duties have traditionally taken them from us during our spring Convention. It was a joy to have them at our Unity Luncheon where I was able to finally publicly thank Deb Strahanoski for her years of mentorship. It was very special. And yes, we both cried!

Another highlight was hearing the announcement of our 2015 LEADS candidate, Amy Vicioso! Amy is just such a tremendous leader and we are just thrilled that she is taking the next step in her GFWC leadership journey. Our organization needs strong leaders in the future and she is certainly one bright star to watch for!

A third highlight was the announcement of our Junior Leadership Awards. Each year we award a Spark Plug Award – going to a new Junior who has come out of the gate swinging for the fences, helping out on a multitude of club projects and expressing a desire in club leadership. We also award a Junior of the Year, going to a Junior who has some club years behind her and who has made a difference in her club and community. And our most coveted Junior award – Outstanding Junior Service, which is awarded to a Junior with multiple years of club service behind her and who is exemplary in every facet of club leadership. What a pleasure it was to congratulate three fantastic leaders in our Junior Organization: Michelle Johnson, Metamora-Germantown Hills JWC; Teresa Osterloo, Encore Club of Metamora; and Janet Scaliatine, Lombard JWC.

It was also a wonderful honor to have Sheila Shea, GFWC President Elect in attendance at our Convention. I am looking forward to where she will take our organization in 2016-2018!

As for my Memphis trip, and the 125th celebration of GFWC International, what can I possibly say other than it was one of the most exciting, inspiring, motivating, entertaining, amazing, outstanding Conventions I have ever attended! Oh how I wish you all could have been there with myself, Diane and 30 other GFWC IL clubwomen to feel the energy and spirit of volunteerism that filled the rooms….all the way to the rafters! For pictures and more commentary, be sure to “like” GFWC on Facebook and of course, our GFWC IL Junior Organization Facebook page.

A HUGE congratulations to each and every one of you as the GFWC IL Juniors were awarded the first ever Membership Increase Award! To be honored in front of the entire delegation for being the state federation to see the largest increase in Junior membership is a moment in time I will never forget. GFWC IL Juniors welcomed 128 new members in 2014!!

To me, increasing and retaining our club membership is our most crucial task. With more members, we can do even more in our communities. And with HAPPY members comes MORE members, so remember to thank your club members for their time and make them feel valued. The work we do is so important and is helping so many – let’s keep up the momentum and take that award again next year!

I also want to say a special congratulations to the Joliet Junior Woman’s Club for being the only GFWC IL club to be recognized at this year’s convention – in 2 categories, which is amazing! The club was recognized with Club Creativity Awards in Fundraising and for their project work in the Women’s History & Resource Center. As Joliet Juniors, Debbie and I about both fell over when they announced those awards – it was very exciting!

GFWC IL also received two other very important awards, receiving 1st Place in both Leadership and for our state federation work on the Signature Project! OUTSTANDING! And Trisha Schafer, our immediate Past Director of Junior Clubs, shone as she was part of the presenting Leadership Committee at this year’s LEADS Seminar! Wonderful job, Trisha; you make us all so very proud!

Traveling with GFWC IL President Diane Addante, President Elect Phyllis Skubic, Director Elect Jeanette T. Wells and the rest of our Illinois delegation was just too much fun! Wished we could have stayed 5 MORE days! We were also fortunate enough to have some time with our much-loved and adored Jackie Pierce, past GFWC International President, as she cheered us on from the Past Presidents’ Skybox seating in the auditorium! What memories we have and what truly special friendships we have made.

The workshops, LEADS Seminar, Elvis’ performance at the Shot @ Life Banquet, the Opening Session with the Parade of Flags, the Closing Gala Celebration, Elvis’ performance in the Junior Suite (lol)….I truly could go on and on but I’m running out of room. For all the Convention highlights, watch for our FB posts, Key Notes, and GFWC’s News & Notes! Diane and I will also be speaking at next month’s Region Meetings – hope to see you at one!

Until then, I remain yours in Federation Friendship,

Karyn
